    Year of Release: 1992
    Rating:

Michael Penn (actor Sean's older brother) emerged with his debut album March in 1989. His follow up, Free For All gets the nod of approval this week. Although the debut launched a hit single in "No Myth," there weren't any major songs from his sophomore release, yet his musical style from his debut continued onwards.

The opening track sets an accoustic folk sound in "Long Way Down (Look What The Cat Drug In)." A nice pop sounding feel is heard on "Free Time," likewise soft pop rock style on "Coal." "Seen The Doctor" has a hard pop rock style, and a darker mysterious rock edge is heard on the next track, "By The Book."

The later years of Bob Dylan and Tom Petty and their style relates to "Drained," and the easy-styled lite pop best describes the next two songs, "Slipping My Mind" and "Strange Season." A nice accoustic easygoing style is heard on "Bunker Hill," and a bit more rock style on the last track, "Now We're Even."

Free For All is a good, easy styled album. A little Beatlesque as well, since Michael Penn was a Beatle fan. There may not have been any major hits from his second album, yet it does have a good and impressive sound. Another 4 years would pass before his third album was released, Resigned in 1997. He married singer Aimme Mann (Til Tuesday), and also worked with filmmaking and soundtracks, writing music for the movies Hard Right and Boogie Nights. His most recent album was released in 2000, MP4: Days Since A Lost Accident.
