The merge of rapper Jay-Z and Alternative Rock band Linkin Park was an unusual
combination. The result was Collision Course," an album that would top the
Billboard album chart in December, 2005, for one week. In summary, the merging of
these two proved to be a good combination. The music of Jay-Z's rap and the hard
rock of Linkin Park should turn heads in a positive way, for those who favor both of
the two's styles of music.
"Dirt Off Your Shoulder/Lying From You" is probably everyone's favorite,
as it features an incredible rock style, likewise the next two tracks,
"Big Pimpin'/Papercut" and "Jigga What/Faint." It's as if another
white rapper merged with the white rock act Linkin Park. (Now, that would be an
interesting album, the white rap/rock of Eminem & Linkin Park.)
"Numb/Encore" is considered everyone's second favorite, it blends well with
the rock of Linkin Park, the rap style of Jay-Z, and even the vocals of Linkin Park
is an even mix, as when Elton John teamed up with Eminem on the Grammys with Eminem's
"Stan." "Izzo/In The End" combines Jay-Z and Linkin Park in a more rap
domination. The album's ending track is another interesting concept, "Points Of
Authority/99 Problems/One Step Closer" with its hard rock sound, and the rapping
of Jay-Z and Linkin Park. Another interesting vocal line is "99 Problems, and my
bitch ain't one of them..."
What makes this dynamic duo combination better, is the DVD, where the cameras
capture the music in the making in the studio. Watching the songs mix and merge between
the two, is truly interesting, as most are fascinated on how music is created, with the
giant mixer boards and today's computer technologies. A live concert at the Roxy Theater
in West Hollywood captures the excitement of Jay-Z and Linkin Park with the audience
enjoying each and every rap and hard rock note.
The only argument are the lyrics: The line heard in "99 Problems" may turn
a few people off ("99 Problems and my bitch ain't one.", and the audience
particpation of screaming "Shut Up!"), but the merging of two different musical styles
is the highlight, and the DVD puts the icing on the cake. Its as if seeing the merge
of rappers Run DMC and rockers Aerosmith. The title is appropriate: "Collision
Course" collided rap and rock, and the results turned into an #1 album, and another
rare moment in music history.
