Duran Duran returns with their 1993 self-titled release, also titled
(The Wedding Album). As mentioned in previous Duran Duran reviews on
this site, I was never really a major Duran Duran fan. Only a small portion
of their music has been favored. Although listening to their albums will
either make me cringe or think "ok, this is alright to listen to," this week's
album once again has myself cringing more than exactly sherring with delight.
"Too Much Information" is probably considered the best song from
this album, as it has the typical Duran Duran sound famous from their 1980s
heydays. "Ordinary World" is mellow, having a 1980s Pop style, and
I just remembered how annoying lead singer Simon LeBon's vocals were. Speaking
of, "Love Voodoo" is very distracting.
Techno fans will enjoy "Drowning Man," as most bands in the 1990s
turned to this direction. (U2's Pop) "Shotgun" is short, being
less than a minute, and sounding more like a Pop Duran Duran commercial.
"Come Undone" isn't bad, nor good, just fair. Different best
describes "Breath After Breath" -- different sounding for both LeBon's
vocals and the band's popular sound. It's really a hit-or-miss.
"U.M.F.", like many of their songs (in my opinion) -- the music is
pretty good, yet the vocals (LeBon) I just can't stomach. The same can be said
for a later song on this release, "To Whom It May Concern."
"Femme Fatale" is promising, only due to the fact that it was a
remake originally by The Velvet Underground, fronted by Lou Reed. (Duran
Duran's next release would consist of cover tunes -- Thank You [1995].)
"None Of The Above" and "Shelter" have the typical 1980s
DD sound. The vocals are fairly done, so these songs are not really that bad.
"Sin Of The City" starts out weird, and in fact, this whole song is just
weird.
Whether you like them or not, Duran Duran became one of the best Pop bands
of the 1980s. Many bands were better than them in my opinion. But like any
bands and musical styles, some are liked by others, and others hated. As
Wikipedia mentions the music artist Moby's comments about Duran Duran:
As Moby said of the band in his website diary in 2003: "... they were cursed by
what we can call the 'Bee Gees' curse, which is: 'write amazing songs, sell tons of
records, and consequently incur the wrath or disinterest of the rock obsessed critical
establishment'."
Translation... You like them, or you hate them... Enough said.
