The British band World Party's first album, Private Revolution produced
one major hit, "Ship Of Fools," a song that was introduced to me by a high
school friend. From 1986 to recent, they would release a handful of albums, yet
become a band not well-remembered, unless you're a devoted fan. After listening
to Private Revolution, it seems this album's music just has a common sound,
and nothing really to jump up and down about. "Ship Of Fools" is a great song,
just that the rest of the album may not have been as exciting.
Influenced by the likes of funk, R&B, soul, it's really hard to distinguish
this album in one particular genre. Songs such as the title track and "Making
Love (To The World)" has a R&B and funk feels (as in Prince), yet afterwards,
"Ship Of Fools" has a common rock style, and the common late 1980s Pop for
"All Come True." "Dance Of The Hoppy Lads" is a very short, 44
second instrumental ditty.
"It Can Be Beautiful (Sometimes)" is a complete different approach --
the New Age style, as heard in the later recordings of Rick Wakeman. Bob Dylan
comes to mind on the next two tracks, "The Ballad Of The Little Man,"
and "Hawaiian Island World." This song also has the style of the early
Rolling Stones. Speaking of Dylan, there is "All I Really Want To Do,"
which was originally recorded and written by Bob Dylan. Like the Dylaneque
tunes, "World Party" has a somewhat late 1960s feel. The last track,
"It's All Mine," is the least song to listen to, and possibly the worst
song.
"Ship Of Fools" is the only highlight from Private Revolution.
After listening to this release, it's unlikely to expand your knowledge of this
band, by listening to future releases. Although, some artists' later releases
could be far better than their debut or not, I've never heard of World Party's
future songs being major hits. "Ship Of Fools" is the only favorable
song on this release, although the remaining songs are either hit or miss.
