Huey Lewis & The News returns to the WSVNRadio site, with Small World,
released in 1988. This album didn't get as much popularity as their predecessors
Sports and Fore! (both of which reach #1 on the album chart).
The song "Perfect World" got the most radio airplay, but there were far
better songs than that one from this release. There weren't any #1 songs from
this album, as some should have.
"Small World" is a great song, likewise the Tex-Mex feel of "Old
Antone's". Both songs are grea, and having the traditional HLN sound of
the past. "Bobo Tempo" has a more reggae feel. "Small World Part 2"
journeyed into a more jazz feel. "Small World Part 2" is an instrumental,
focusing on the jazz-tinged saxophone.
"Walking With The Kid" is another traditional HLN style, likewise
"World To Me" having a slower tempo feel. "Beeter Be True" is
another HLN standard, yet these past 3 songs didn't quite capture the energy as
the first 3. "Give Me The Keys (And I'll Drive You Crazy)" has better
potential, and the last track, the instrumental "Slammin'" is just a
damn cool song, as it can be used for a radio show theme song.
Small World has the traditional HLN sound, yet not as catchy as
other releases. It's a good album, as the upbeat songs such as "Small World,"
"Old Antone's" and "Slammin'" are the standouts. For the HLN fan
and colletor, it's a good album to have. But comparing it to their better
albums, there are better ones than this. "Slammin'" alone is such a
great song, and some of the other songs are just as good.
