The big hit song from But Seriously Folks was "Life's Been Good."
Whether you knew either the short or the album version, it has always been a
well-known and favorite song from Walsh's solo career. There weren't any other
popular songs from this album, and listening to it, it sounds like The Eagles
album in a more relaxed fashion, with Walsh's unique vocal style. Most felt
he didn't have a great sounding voice, but like other singers in this comparison,
he was much better as a songwriter, rather than a vocalist.
"Over And Over" does sound like The Eagles, and hearing him sing
the title "Over And Over," you can't seem to place those 3 words sung by
Paul Simon in his hit song "Mother And Child Reunion." "Second Hand
Store" has a relaxed feel, where "Indian Summer" summarizes a
different sound than that of The Eagles, easily distinguishing Walsh's own solo
style.
"At The Station" has a very similar comparison to The Eagles' "In
The City," a song that clearly identifies Joe Walsh as a songwriter and his
own style. "Tomorrow" is very different in sound for Walsh, yet listening
to the vocals, it's easily recognized as Walsh. And "Inner Tube" is
another different song; it's a short instrumental, almost sounding like
Classical/New Age. It leads into the next song, "Theme From Boat Weirdos,"
a song that is very light, and another instrumental, and having a New Age feel
with some slight rock touches as heard from the likes of The Eagles and Jackson
Browne.
All in all, But Seriously Folks is a laid back relaxed-styled album.
The rocking songs are "Life Been's Good" and "At The Station."
Most of the other songs have an Eagles flavor, and it's the vocals that is
easily distinguished as the music and vocals of Joe Walsh. For a nice long
drive, this album is a good one for the long drive in your car CD player.
The best song is saved for last, of course, the classic "Life's Been Good."
Walsh's solo career has been very good for him, and most of his popular songs
are staples on Classic Rock Radio. But it's interesting to listen to the other
non-popular hits and album tracks provided on his original albums. "But
Seriously Folks has its serious moments, yet his non-popular tracks are
worth listening to.
