MOVIE: Candyman
YEAR: 1992
STARS:
Hey everyone. Norma the Voice here with my first ever movie review. I’ll be reviewing movies, DVDs, television shows available on DVD or anything else you are interested in. If you have any suggestions or requests please email me and let me know.

The first movie I wanted to review is one I haven’t seen in a while. I screened this movie just for this review. I originally saw this movie when it was released in 1992. The movie CANDYMAN was released by TriStar pictures. Starring Virginia Madsen, Tony Todd, Xander Berkley and Vanessa Williams in the Clive Barker film based on his short story “The Forbidden”.

The Candyman is based in urban legend lore. A son of a slave who was tortured and murdered for having an affair with a plantation owner’s daughter comes to people who call him today. To “call” him one only has to look in the mirror and say his name five times. He will appear behind you and rip you apart with his hook that replaced his hand.

The story takes place in Chicago’s notorious Cabrini-Green housing projects. It is rumored that the filming crew employed some of the local gang members to prevent violence. Virginia Madsen stars as a graduate student researching for her thesis – urban legends. The story of the Candyman grabs her imagination. She finds out all too soon that this legend is no figment of imagination!.

Tony Todd plays Candyman and gives an excellent performance. I had forgotten that Vanessa Williams was also in this movie. Candyman was followed by two sequels: Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh and Candyman: Day of the Dead. As with most sequels, the original movie is usually the best of the bunch. This would be no exception.

Clive Barker has also brought us other horror films such as “Hellraiser”, “Nightbreed,” “Underworld.” and his new movie “Midnight Meat Train.” I have been reading Clive Barker for years beginning with his series “Books of Blood”. His books are just as entertaining as his movies.

Candyman is considered to be a “slasher” film. Tony Todd’s performance is as creepy as you can get for a horror movie. Contrasting to most of his counterparts, he does speak. Hearing the antagonist of the movie speak is more unnerving than one who doesn’t say a word. The authenticity of Cabrini-Green only adds to the building terror of the movie. The music score also added depth to the film and dimension.

Running time is approximately 99 minutes. Extras on the DVD will vary. I have an older version but it does include the widescreen and full screen versions as well as theatrical trailers. This is rated “R” due to language and brief nudity.

I enjoyed this movie a great deal. I would recommend this to anyone interested in the horror genre. Candyman is a must have for the “slasher” or “urban legend” type horror flicks fan.

I would give this movie FOUR stars out of FIVE.
