Night Ranger returns to WSVNRadio with their 1987 release, Big Life.
Although I discovered Night Ranger's music long after their prime years, their music
has been compared to many 1980s bands. Big Life does have some of those
comparisons, yet after listening to this release, it just seems to sound like any other
popular 1980s band from that time period.
The self-titled song is "just ok" for me. Probably the best song is the next track,
"Color Of Your Smile," having a Pop feel, yet definitely sounding like the rock bands
towards the end of the 1980s decade.
"Love Is Standing Near" sounds more like a song from a movie soundtrack, (which
"The Secret Of My Success" was; the movie of the same name, starring Michael J. Fox).
Of course, for most hard rock bands (especially from the 1980s), every album must have at
least one ballad, and "Rain Comes Crashing Down" is a pretty good ballad to mention.
The rest of the tracks seems to follow the same traditions of the 1980s decade of rock,
"Carry On," "Never Let It Go," "I Know Tonight" and "Hearts Away" all have the
medium pop rock sound, yet having the harder rock edge.
Big Life is an album not to really rant and rave about; it's just about the same
as any other rock band from the 1980s decade, such as Kiss or Bon Jovi. A fairly decent
album, Big Life is good, yet there are better NR albums than this.
