The Steve Miller Band returns this week, with their 1973 release, The
Joker. Not only was the title track a #1 hit, the album also reached #1
on the album charts. Miller's touches of Pop and Blues have always had the
listening with a good feeling. Having more of the Pop and Blues in tracks on
this release, his sound would improve with keyboards and synthesizers,
distinguishing his signature sound.
Classic Rock definitely is compared to on many tracks, including the
album's opener -- "Sugar Babe." A good blues groove is heard on
"Mary Lou." The Classic Rock style returns on an unusual track title --
"Shu Ba Da Du Ma Ma Ma Ma."
Steve Miller almost gets a rap vocal going at the beginning of "Your
Cash Ain't Nothin' But Trash"; yet it's his typical bluesy rock that sets
the stage for this song. Good upbeat harmonica blues is on "The Lovin'
Cup," a song I believe that was a B-side to one of his later hits.
Live Blues sounds good on "Come On In My Kitchen," slow blues for
"Evil", and a nice, easy going sound on "Something To Believe In."
Some good Pop Blues on The Joker. Although the title track is the
lone standout, Miller's bluesy touches are a good mix. His albums became
better as the years passed, with the great synthesizers, simple melodies, and
a great musician, being part of the great Classic Rock we all enjoy and love.
