This week, Rich Mullins makes his debut on the WSVNRadio website, with his 1991 release, The World As Best As I
Remember It Vol. 1 (There was a Vol. 2 release also.) As I was researching Christian music, The name Rich Mullins
had appeared numerously. Although he never achieved a #1 song or #1 album on the Billboard Christian charts himself, he
was praised very highly with his music. He was also a songwriter, in which other Christian artists had recorded his music.
Especially the song "Awesome God," which was recorded by other (Christian) artists - (Michael W. Smith). And,
that song was recorded in different genres of music, from ska to swing to rock and traditional worship style, even hardcore
punk and heavy metal. Yet, other recordings written by Mullis were recorded by Christian artists Caedmon's Call, Amy Grant,
Jars Of Clay, Michael W. Smith, John Tesh, Rebecca St. James, Hillsong United and Third Day. CCM Magazine listed some of
Mullin's albums in their ranking of
The 100 Greatest
Albums in Christian Music. Sadly, Mullins died at the young age of 41 from a car accident, September 19, 1997.
The World As Best As I Remember It Vol. 1 was released in 1991. Starting the album is "Step By Step."
the album. "Life Is Sweet" is soft-rock. It has a lead vocal in the beginning of it that is very high ranged,
yet towards the end, it's a beautiful song of Christian music. This song would become a popular contemporary worship song
among Christians. "Step By Step" and it's reprise (last song) were the only songs NOT written or co-written by
Mullins. The remaining tracks were written by Mullins, as "Boy Like Me/Man Like You" is a beautiful acoustic song.
"Where You Are" has a more Rock/Christian style, with plenty of energy in sound. Beautiful easily describes the
next track, the piano-driven "Jacob And 2 Women." "The Howling" is just as exceptional.
"Calling Out Your Name" continues great, pleasant-sounding (Christian) music. The lead instrumental is beautiful,
as Mullins' vocals follows, making this song even better. "Who God Is Gonna Use" is also energetic, combining Rock
with Christian. "The River" is gentle, soothing, beautiful. "I See You" is powerful. "Step By Step
(Reprise)" ends the album, and it is better than the lead-off track - that high-ranged voice from the opening track
could have been left out.
It's easy to hear how Rich Mullin's music is exceptional in the Christian music genre. The comparisons to other great
Christian artists are here, such as Bob Carlise, and Michael W. Smith, to name a few. Beautiful, calming music is the
main sound heard on this album. Rich Mullins left behind a great legacy of music, whether it be written by him (8 out of
10) on The World As Best As I Remember It Vol. 1. More of Mullin's music will be reviewed here on WSVNRadio.
Enjoy the great music that Rich Mullins had offered for us. It's sad how he left us, where more of his music could have
been written and recorded. But the music he did provide for us will be forever worshipped and glorified. Rich Mullins
(1955 - 1997) : Gone too soon.
