Lou Rawls "When You Hear Lou, You've Heard It All"
An excellent album title, it was based on a Budweiser beer TV commercial,
(When You Say Bud, You've Said It All...) where Lou Rawls was the announcer.
Born in Chicago on December 1, 1933, Lou Rawls had always been a popular figure
in the Chicagoland area (his Parade of Stars telethon was a prominent
annual event, almost as popular as Jerry Lewis' Muscular Dystrophy).
Sadly, Lou Rawls passed away this year on January 6, yet left behind great
Soul/Easy Listening music. His music appeals to the romantic side of Soul
music, easily compared to the likes of Barry White and Luther Vandross.
In 1977, one of his famous (and favorite to many) hits was "Lady Love,"
from his album When You Say Lou, You've Heard It All.
"I Wish It Were Yesterday" has a good soul approach, and could
possibly pass on most New Age Jaz formats. "One Life To Live" has a
Pop and Soul sound, and could have been used for the TV soap of the same name.
Cool upbeat jazz (as heard in the song "Route 66") best describes
"Dollar Green." The "Lady Love" style is heard on "Trade
Winds" and even "There Will Be Love," yet more upbeat.
"Unforgettable" is the Nat King Cole classic, and Rawls' version
is very cool and smooth. Upbeat Soul/Pop as in "Lady Love" is heard on
another good song, "That Would Do It For Me." Cool and smooth is
"If I Could Woulda Shoulda," and the closing song "Not The Staying
Kind" can easily fit the Smooth New Age Jazz formats.
The lovers in all of us comes out on Lou Rawls' If You Hear Lou, You'vee
Heard It All. Smooth Jazz & Soul lovers will enjoy this one as well.
We recently lost the great talents of Rawls (01/01/2006), Barry White (07/04/2003)
and Luther Vandross (07/01/2005), but each one of them left behind a legacy of
music that will be enjoyed for many generations to come. We've heard of the
Three Tenors, we can classify Rawls, White and Vandross as the Three Angels in
Heaven, singing together, and knowing that everyone up there will enjoy them,
just as we enjoyed their music when they were in their prime, and still will
continue to cherish them
