"20th Century Masters: The Best Of Tom T. Hall-The Millennium Collection"

Tom T. Hall was certainly one of the milestones in Country music.. Not only his songs (which he pretty much wrote all of them) that he sang on were popular, he was also an exceptional songwriter. He wrote "Harper Valley P.T.A." (covered by Jeannie C. Riley). He accomplished many #1 songs on the Country chart, recorded by himself, and if you're looking for every one of those #1s, you'll find it on his 20th Centry Masters Best Of Millennium from Mercury Records. Other songs he penned was the #1 "The Pool Shark," by Dave Dudley. Two songs by Bobby Bare: "(Margie's At) The Lincoln Park Inn" and "That's How I Got To Memphis."

Basically almost every song on this collection I remember. The only ones I didn't remember were: "Ballad Of Forty Dollars," "Ravishing Ruby," and "P.S. I Love You." All the remaining songs were #1, except "That Song Is Driving Me Crazy." (There is another best of of Hall's : Greatest Hits Volume I and II. One song from that particular greatest that is not on the 20th Century is "Faster Horses." Of course, there are many other tunes from Hall on the Greatest I and II. 12 songs were on the 20th Century, compared to 22 on Greatest Hits I and II. Both I and II were released separate on vinyl back in the day. Both I and II were combined for CD release.

For those who remember his hits, his story telling was phenomenal: Who can't say they don't like "I Like Beer" ? "I Care" and "I Love" just simply touches your heart. Hall just knew how to write great Country lyrics. And of course, who just loves to say the phrase "That Song Is Driving Me Crazy" ... Tom T. Hall was great to recite that famous phrase into a popular Country song. As for the others I remember, these were #1 Country songs, and yes, as I first heard them from these compilations, 99% of them, my memory bank surely said, "Yes, I remember that song..."

Interesting reading: He wrote the song "Little Bitty" which would become a #1 song for Alan Jackson, in 1996. He was inducted into the Country Hall of Fame, in 2008.

Tom T. Hall is still with us, as he is now 79 years old. Recently, he as recognized as BMI Icon at the 60th Annual BMI Country Awards (2012). He has a total of 31 BMI Awards. All of his awards are listed on his main website, at Tom T Hall.net

A great storyteller, a great Country artist. Tom T. Hall is one of the true Country legends. His songs bring chuckles and smiles. Storytelling was a huge part in Country music. Hall certainly knows how to tell a story, in each of his songs. If you have yet to discover Tom T. Hall, I highly recommended you to do so. Start with "I Like Beer," then "I Love" and "I Care." You'll definitely want to listen to his music.
