    "Greatest Hits"

During the 1980s and 1990s, I had lost touch with the latest in Country music. When researching from these decades, the group Highway 101 achieved four number songs on Billboard's Country singles chart. Unfortunately, none of these songs rang memory bells for me, likewise the group name themselves, Highway 101. However, in listening to their songs, they definitely fit the Country sound. The group was lead by female vocalist Paulette Carlson. And throughout their career, they had other female singers, in which Carlson stepped down, but she did return (1986-1990, 1996-1997). Nikki Nelson took over the lead vocals (1991-1994, 2006-2010). Chryslnn Lee was the other female vocalist, (1997-2005). As of 2011, Nikki Nelson is part of the lineup of Highway 101.

Their Greatest Hits compilation, released in 1990, and consisting of songs from the group's first 3 studio albums, from the years 1987 to 1989. Paulette Carlson was the lead singer. Carlson's voice is definiitely a similarity to Dolly Parton. Therefore, you can easily determine, that Highway 101 is a Country group, and these 10 songs definitely fit what we would expect, from Country music.

The #1 songs from this set were: "Somewhere Tonight," "Cry, Cry, Cry," (Do You Love Me) Just Say Yes," and "Who's Lonely Now." All four songs reached #1 in the year 1987. 1987 was the year that "The Bed You Made For Me" and "Whiskey, If You Were A Woman" were Top 5 hits. "Honky Tonk Heart" was a Top 10 hit in 1989, and 1990 was the year in which "Someone Else's Trouble Now" and "This Side Of Goodbye" were Top 15 hits. "Someone Else's Trouble Now" was a new recording; not on any previous Highway 101. The other new recording, was "The Change."

Highway 101 Greatest Hits is a great collection of good Country music from the late 1980s decade. It defines Country. They just may not have been a popular group as others (from my knowledge), but they do definte the great Country sound, as what it should sound like. Paulette Carlson pursued a solo career, consisting of 3 albums; one of them a Christmas album. During her solo period, she returned to Highway 101. She also wrote the song "Thank You Vets" in 2004, a song inspired by her brother Gary, as he was a Vietnam Vet and in the hospital at the time. Currently, Carlson is performing on tours with her backing group, Montana Rising.
