"Car Wheels On A Gravel Road"
Lucinda Williams debuts this week, with her 1998 release, Car Wheels On A Gravel Road. Her music is
categorized as Rock, although the music on this album could fall in other categories. Such as Americana, or even Country.
My first knowledge of her, was from a song from this album, "Can't Let Go". (If you like KT Tunstall's "Black
Horse And The Cherry Tree," you'll like "Can't Let Go.") She has recorded albums since 1979, and she has kept
recording since. Her latest album was released in 2023.
"Right In Time" definitely has a great Rock sound, comparing to another female Rock legend, Sheryl Crow. The
title track is next, another great Rock tune, just as Sheryl Crow. "2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten" (what a kool song title!)
is quite smooth (kool), and defnitely has a Sheryl Crow-like sound. "Drunken Angel" continues the kool Rock sounds,
"Concrete And Barbed Wire" sounds more Country, than that of Rock. "Lake Charles" is also smooth, kinda
blusey, it just works. "Can't Let Go" is one of those great swamp-type sounding tracks, as heard in John Fogerty
songs. As mentioned, the KT Tunstall tune is a great comparison. "I Lost It" has a great Rock and Country sound,
and quite frankly, "Today's Country" should sound more like this. "Metal Firecracker" could also pass for Country,
and, like other tracks, it's another good Rock tune. "Greenville" slows down the pace, in a great way, as it has
a slight sound to Norah Jones. "Still I Long For Your Kiss" is a great Rock and Blues track, and gets another
comparison to another great female singer, Susan Tedeschi. More of the great Blues Rock is heard on "Joy." Ending
the album is the Country-ish "Jackson," a very pleasant tune.
Lucinda Williams' Car Wheels On A Gravel Road is a great album, and easy to listen to, as you're driving those
car wheels on any road. It's Rock, Country, Blues, and quite honestly, there isn't one bad track on this album. Comparing
to Sheryl Crow is quite a comparison, and on some tunes, Norah Jones comes to mind, and if she (Jones) were to go in this
musical direction, this is probably what she may sound like. All in all, it's a great album, and Country playlists would
favor having this album in there. Her vocal style is quite grit, and compares to that of Susan Tedeschi. A great album
to add to your collection.
