Blue Oyster Cult "Cultosaurus Erectus"
Blue Oyster Cult returns to the WSVNRadio website, with the review of their
1980 release, Cultosaurus Erectus. Where none of the songs from this
release are well-known, BOC's music has always been an experimention for the
listener.
"Black Blade" defines that experimentation, having a psychedelic
touch, and can easily be compared to the music of Hawkwind. "Monsters"
is another experimental piece, having a classic hard rock sound, and in some
spots a little touch of jazz piano. "Divine Wind" has a more blues
feel, where "Deadline" is very pleasant, almost having a sound compared
to the later years of the Moody Blues. Classic Hard Rock/Heavy Metal best
describes "The Marshall Plan," as it could also be compared to the hard
rock of Hawkwind.
"Hungry Boys" has the rock rock feel as Hawkwind, yet it also has a
almost new wave/punkish appeal as well. "Fallen Angel" returns with
the heavy metal sound, as vocalist Eric Blooms belts out this tune, making it
a challenge for any band to try perform their own version of this song, if
prompted. From start to finish on "Lips In The Hills," it's classic
hard rock/heavy metal. "Unknown Tongue" is a great classic rock song,
having a progressive rock style as well.
Cultosaurus Erectus is a very experimental album. It blends BOC's
music into traditional Classic Rock, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. With repeated
listens, this album will greatly be more appreciated, and recognizes their music
as even though none of the songs maybe considered Top 40 hits, their music is
meant to be enjoyed as an FM AOR band, underground, and as a popular cult band.
