"Feats Don't Fail Me Now"
Little Feat was one of many great bands to emerge out of the late 1960s -
1970s. Lowell George was the prominent leader (guitarist/vocalist). Easily
compared to Grateful Dead, The Band and Southern Rock, George unfortunately
passed away in 1979, after annoucning the breakup of Little Feat, and while
on tour with his own band, suffered a heart attack. Little Feat's music is
a treat to listen to, and even though the band would reform and record albums
after George's passing, the Lowell George era of Little Feat has always been
voted the best.
On the band's 1974 release, Feats Don't Fail Me Now, there are great
comparisons to the Grateful Dead and The Band. "Rock And Roll Doctor"
defintely has the sound of the Grateful Dead, where "Oh Atlanta" is
compared to The Band. "Skin It Back" has a more soulful rock approach.
"Down The Road" is a bit more Southern Rock and to that of The Band,
and can also be compared to the style of the next song, "Spanish Moon,"
a song that Robert Palmer would record from one of his earlier albums. (After
Lowell George's passing, it was rumoured that Palmer would be George's vocal
replacement.)
The title track compares to both The Dead and The Band, likewise
"The Fan," yet it hasa more concert-sounding style of The Dead from their
later years. The medley of "Cold Cold Cold/Tripe Face Boogie" also
compares to the Grateful Dead.
As you read this review, it's obvious how Little Feat is compared to two of
the best bands in Rock, The Grateful Dead and The Band. Fans of all three can
easily agree, their music is exceptional. And, with the personnel changes of
all three bands, (Robbie Robertson left from The Band, the passing of The
Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia, and Lowell George), all three bands have regrouped
and are still performing and/or recording. Take a listen to all 3 bands, and
you'll agree, that Rock and Roll does have its best bands from the late '60s to
'70s.
