    "Survivor/Jimi Jamison Collection Volume 2"

Survivor/Jimi Jamison Collection Volume 2 is a collection of songs sung by Jimi Jamison as lead vocalist for the band Survivor. Jamison took over the role after original singer Davie Bickler left after 1983 albums Eye Of The Tiger and Caught In The Game. This Survivor/Jamison Collection 2 consists of songs from the band's album Too Hot To Sleep (1988) and Jamison's solo material.

There are 10 songs for this collection: The first 5 songs are SURVIVOR tracks. The first 2 of the 5 are different songs from 2 different releases: "I Can't Hold Back" from Vital Signs (1984), and the hit from the Rocky IV soundtrack, "Burning Heart." The remaining 3 songs are from the Too Hot Too Sleep release: The title track, "Tell Me I'm The One" and "Burning Bridges." Of the 5, the first two are the standouts. No doubt, all 5 tracks are superior in their own rights in the great Survivor sound.

The remaining 5 tracks are from Jamison's solo material. "Taste Of Love" has a more harder rock edge, as most 1980s Rock Hair Bands. "Long Walk Home" also is harder-edged, almost like an AC/DC song. "Cry Alone" is more of a ballad, in the vein of Bon Jovi's "Dead Or Alive," and different than a Survivor ballad. "Rock Hard" could be a song by Survivor, it has the band's commonday sound. Yet towards its end, it is more harder-edged as the other solo tracks by Jamison. "Angry Young Man" is another ballad. All 5 solo tracks were from Jamison's 1991 solo album, When Love Comes Down. (You can find the remaining original 5 tracks from When Love Comes Down on the Survivor/Jim Jamsion Collection Volume 1.)

Jim Jamison's solo tracks are far different than that of the common Survivor sound. As most critics reviewed this Collection, they agree this is for the Jimi Jamison fan. The Survivor tracks are the most that stand out (especially "I Can't Hold Back" and "Burning Heart.") This Collection is a fairly good CD. Not only is it for the Jim Jamison fan (he goes by the name Jimi Jamison now), but for the fans of Survivor as well.

Jimi Jamison is currently working on his third solo release, entitled Extra Moments. According to his discography on his website, this latest album has a July 2010 pre-release date. His second solo album was released in 2009, entitled Crossroads Moment. Original lead singer Dave Bickler left Survivor in 1983, due to throat vocal cords problems, and required surgery and a year-and-a-half-long recovery. He rejoined Survivor in 1993 for a Survivor Greatest Hits release, featuring two new songs. He was hoping for a new album with Survivor, but lawsuits and copyrights with Jamison resulted. Bickler remained with the band until 2000, when he was fired and replaced by Jamison again. Jamison remained with the band until 2006, and was replaced by current singer Robin McAuley. McAuley had worked with Michael Schenker. Last heard, Bickler had been working on a solo album since 2001, which has yet to be released. Yet he has recorded commercials and jingles for television.

Survivor's most recent release of original material was recorded in 2006's Reach with Jimi Jamison as vocalist. Robin McAuley joined afterwards, as is currently their lead singer. Only guitarist Frankie Sullivan is the original founding member of the band. Jim Peterik was one of the original founding members, but left to regroup The Ides Of March in 2006.

Survivor has pretty much had their best years behind them. They are best remembered with singers Dave Bickler and/or Jimi Jamison, likewise the Jim Peterik years. We have yet to hear new material with their lead singer Robin McAuley. Survivor continues to tour. They are currently reworking their website, at SurvivorMusic.com.

UPDATE: September 1, 2014: It is of great sadness to report that Jimi Jamison, lead singer of Survivor, passed away at his home in Memphis, Tennessee. The cause of death was from a hemorrhagic brain stroke, with ‘acute methamphetamine intoxication contributing.’ An autopsy report also confirmed he had cardiovascular disease, which led to a 90% blockage of each coronary artery. He was 63 years old.
