"The 2nd Crusade"
The Crusaders mark their debut this week, with their 1973 release, The 2nd Crusade. They originally began as The Jazz Crusaders. They
recorded many albums through the 1960s decade (1961-1970). In the 1970s, they shortened their name to The Crusaders, and recorded many albums throughout
that decade. From the 1970s, they would achieve seven #1 albums, on the Billboard Jazz Albums Chart.
The 2nd Crusade (1973) became the band's first #1 album. The bandmembers on this album were Wilton Felder (sax, bass, bass marimba), Wayne
Henderson (trombone), Nesbert "Stix" Hooper (drums, percussion), Joe Sample (keyboards). Friends included Arthur Adams, Larry Carlton, and David T.
Walker (guitar). Joe Sample and Larry Cartlon would persue solo careers of their own, including #1 albums to their names.
The 2nd Crusade has great soulful jazz throughout the album. Jazz, Funk, R&B, Soul. They're all here.
The album leads off with a great soulful number, "Don't Let It Get You Down." Soulful R&B gets the nod on both "Take It Or Leave It,"
and Gotta Get It On." The latter of the two songs has a great funky beat as well. If you're familiar with another R&B band, named War, their
music comes to mind on the next track, "Where There's A Will There's A Way."
A more relaxing style jazz is heard on "Look Beyond The Hill. Upbeat jazz on "Journey From Within," likewise and soulful R&B on
"Ain't Gon' Change A Thang." (The word "thang" was around back then?) Upbeat Soulful Jazz (rather than R&B) on "A Message From The Inner
City." Searching for pure Jazz? "A Search For Soul is Jazz.
Relaxing jazz gets the nod on "No Place To Hide," More on Soul on the last three tracks: "Tomorrow Where Are You," "Tough Talk" and
"Do You Remember When." The last track is not only soul, but it's a nice soulful jazz sound.
The Crusaders 2nd Crusade is a great listen of Jazz, Soul and R&B. It's a great album for Jazz lovers. No doubt, there's enough Jazz here
for everyone's tastes. Relaxing Jazz, Funky Jazz, R&B Jazz, Soul Jazz. It's is Jazz. The Crusaders continued their music throughout the past 35 years.
Different formations of the group emerged, as they returned in the 1990s, as members Wayne Henderson and Wilton Felder were the from the original lineup.
Joe Sample was also part of the reunions. Sad to say, there were bandmembers who have passed away: Wayne Henderson in 2014, Joe Sample in 2014, and
Wilton Felder in 2015.
The Crusaders is great Jazz music. Enjoy their 2nd Crusade, as it began a great successful journey to the top of the Jazz Albums chart.
This album will get repeated listens, as you'll discover how gifted and talented all of the musicians in this group really were.
