Mumford & Sons returns this week, with their 2018 release, Delta (Their first review here was Babel. Delta would become the band's third #1 album; their fourth in their career. Three hit singles were from the album - "Guiding Light," "Beloved," and "Woman." The band has yet to achieve a #1 hit single, however their albums have reached #1, giving them a great listen of the "newer" music in Popular Music.

From the album's Wikipedia: Delta has been called an album that "draw[s] on the shared experience of being on and off" tour, and distinct from the band's "anthemic" previous album, 2015's Wilder Mind, in that it is more "tender", "introspective and reflective". It incorporates elements of electronica, rap and jazz. It has been said to still contain the "intimacy and jubilance" that the band is known for, but keyboard player Ben Lovett said it is also concerned with "the four Ds: death, divorce, drugs and depression". Mumford spoke to Annie Mac about reusing folk instruments they did not use on Wilder Mind but being "conscious [about] how we can make these instruments sound not like these instruments which opened up a whole new world for us."

Larry Fritzmaurice of Pitchfork compared the album to pop acts Imagine Dragons and Twenty One Pilots, while heavily comparing the album's length and structure to British rock band Coldplay's album X&Y, noting they both share an "imposing length". Piper Westrom of Riff Magazine stated that, in contrast to Wilder Mind's rock-oriented sound, Delta is a pop album.

Leading off the album is "24" - a song that has a great sound, and the start of another great album to listen to. "Guiding Light" (the first hit single) is next, and it also has a great sound. "Woman" (the third hit single) continues the great sound of Mumford & Sons. "Beloved" (the second hit single) definitely has the status of being a great hit single. It should have easily reached #1, on either Billboard's Hot 100 and/or Billboard's Mainstream Rock singles charts. "The Wild" is a more laid-back song, and it keeps the flow of great music. "October Skies" is also a laid-back tune, and just as equally great as the previous track, "The Wild," easily fitting the album's concept. "Slip Away" (again), keeps the greatness continuing. "Rose Of Sharon" is another great track. "Picture You" could have easily been another hit single from the album. "Picture You" blends into the next track, "Darkness Visible," as this track definitely has a "Darkness atmosphere" to it. It is "visibly" heard, as another great track, having it's own "mystery" to it. "If I Say" is another great track, with it's comfortable sound in nature. and "if I say" ... it also has it's own unique atmosphere to it, being great in sound. "Wild Heart" is also another (great) laid-back track. Laid-back also defines "Forever," it's very peaceful, a beautiful sounding track. Ending the album is the title track - another peaceful great track, as near it's end, it has a great Pop sound, upbeat in nature, as it ends another great album by the band - Mumford & Sons.

Going back to the Wikipedia article... "It incorporates elements of electronica, rap and jazz." In my opinion, absolutely NOT for either of these three genres. Actually, the musical style can be compared to that of Christian music. I could see Mumford & Sons recording an album with Christian themes of the music contained on Delta, given the chance. Another quote from the Wikipedia article... "Larry Fritzmaurice of Pitchfork compared the album to pop acts Imagine Dragons and Twenty One Pilots, while heavily comparing the album's length and structure to British rock band Coldplay's album X&Y." Imagine Dragons Smoke And Mirrors -- In comparing this album to Mumford & Sons (both albums reviewed here), Mumford & Sons is bar far, way better than Imagine Dragons. (Until another Imagine Dragons album review can succeed in being better than Mumford & Sons, that is to be determined later.) Twenty One Pilots is yet to be reviewed here. As for Coldplay's X&Y, Mumford & Sons is defiitely a better band than Coldplay. So Larry Fritmaurice's comparisons to both Imagine Dragons and Coldplay is FALSE, in my opinions.

I'm surprised that any of Mumford & Sons' songs have reached #1, on any given genre chart for it. None of the singles from Delta never even hit the Billboard Hot 100. REALLY??? All three singles did reach Billboard's Hot Rock and Alternative Songs, Even though the band is originally from England, the singles from this album did appear on UK's Singles chart, but only the first two singles did appear there, but neither reached the Top 10. "Guiding Light" reached as high as #40, "Beloved" reached #66. Again, REALLY???

Mumford & Sons is a great band, defining great Rock music, in the newer times. If you're looking into the newer bands (from the 21st Century), give Mumford & Sons a listen. Both their Babel and Delta albums are worth listening to. You will not be disappointed.
