    Cher
    "Believe"

    © Warner Bros. Records
    Year of Release: 1998
    Rating:

Things have been good for Cher throughout the years... She had a very successful solo singing career after her divorce from Sonny Bono, she won an academy award for Moonstruck, but recently, the tragic accidental skiing death of Sonny Bono, a gray cloud had come over Cher. Enter Cher's release "Believe," and it would become a comeback for Cher, musically, since we hadn't heard anything from her musically, since her 1991 release Love Hurts.

The title track became Cher's biggest hit ever, as it reached #1 for 4 weeks in 1998, and is truly a great song. "The Power" has power, yet not as powerful as the title track. "Runaway" has the same musical style as "Believe," likewise "All Or Nothing," as it has a sound that was popular in the 1970s, Disco, as heard songs produced by Giorgio Moroder.

"Strong Enough" was the follow-up to "Believe," and just like its predecessor, it's another great disco-influenced dance song. "Dové L'Amore" can easily be compared to a song recorded by Enrique Iglesias, having the now-famous Latin sound. "Takin' Back My Heart" has a cool funky Disco beat, likewise "Taxi Taxi." "Love Is The Groove" and "We All Sleep Alone" both have the Disco-dance sound, which pretty much sums up this entire album.

The Disco-pulsing beat of the 1970s is heard numerously through out Cher's "Believe," as it meets the sound of the late-1990s. It's a great dance album, and with the tragedy of her ex-husband Sonny Bono, the question remained if success would return after such a tragedy. The answer is "YES" for Cher, and I'm sure somewhere in Rock and Roll Heaven, Sonny Bono made sure of that. As the line goes in "Believe" : Do you believe in life after love? we can ask Do you believe in life after Sonny? The answer to both questions is "YES".
