Gordon Lightfoot's has always been grateful in his folk music, very relaxing and rewriting folk music as traditional as fellow folk artists as Bob Dylan. Yet both Dylan and Lightfoot's music are defined as folk, Lightfoot placed a more gentle touch and adult style. 1970's If You Could Read My Mind was his second release on Reprise, and launched his first big hit record, being the title track.

"Minstrel Of The Dawn" and "Approaching Lavender" have the common style of Lightfoot's popular easy listening hits, where his version of Kris Kristofferson's "Me And Bobby McGee" features great accoustic guitar, and has a more folkish/country sound than that of the most popular version, by Janis Joplin.

"Saturday Clothes" is a great easy listening tune, showcasing Lightfoot's voice as bright and relaxing with its accompaning music. "Cobwebs and Dust" mixes both country with folk, likewise "Poor Little Allison" has a more folkish sound, and is compared to Lightfoot's folk style with future hits.

The accoustic guitar blends well with his voice on "Sit Down Young Stranger," another great folk tune, in the style of a young Bob Dylan, yet Lightfoot's voice would sound more exceptional. "Baby It's Alright" has a more adult sound mixed with folk. "Your Love's Return (Song For Stephen Foster)" is another great easy listening folk tune, with his exceptional voice, acoustic guitar, and orchestration. Likewise, "The Pony Man" combines with entertaining results, the acoustic guitar, harmonica and Lightfoot's voice; very early Dylan-ish.

If You Could Read My Mind is a great easy listening, folk album. Every song was written by Lightfoot, with the exception of Kris Kristofferson's "Me And Bobby McGee." He also received help from fellow artists as Randy Newman, John Sebastian, Ry Cooder, Van Dyke Parks, and Nick DeCaro on instrument arrangements. For the folk and country fan alike, this album is sure to be a favorite, and with the upcoming spring weather, this album is a great album to listen to, on a warm spring day.
