Purple Rain became the big breakthrough for Prince and his band,
The Revolution (1984). The follow up album was released a year later, Around
The World In A Day. Prince had just formed his own record label, Paisley
Park, a song from this 1985 release. Where everyone is curious how the followup
album will succeed, Around The World In A Day may not have surpassed
the popularity of its predecessor, but it it's a very good album by the purple
one.
The first two songs, the title track, and "Paisley Park" have a
somewhat Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour atmosphere, especially the
latter tune. "Condition Of The Heart" is a beautiful ballad, and very
impressive, combining the likes of classical and new age jazz. The piano is
truly breathtaking, and can be a very good mood setter.
"Raspberry Beret" is probably the best-known song from this album,
as it received heavy radio airplay when first released as its first single.
"Tambourine" may be the least-favorite to listen to, yet "America"
has the energetic dance sound as heard on another great release, "1999".
"Pop Life" is another personal favorite of mine, having a very nice
pop sound, and should have been another heavy airplay song, if given the chance.
"The Ladder" is another great pop song, having a terrific Soul approach.
"Temptation" may not be as tempting as other tunes on this album, (yet
the ending of this song is quite impressive), as it rounds out a very well done
album for Prince & The Revolution.
Prince has always been impressive on his albums. Some maybe better than
others, yet Prince has given the music business a driving force, in recording
some great pop-sounding songs, dance-driven beats, and incredible sexy lyrics.
Around The World In A Day has some fine moments, and even there are
other albums better than this one from Prince, it is a very entertaining album,
and should be enjoyable for any Prince fan.
