"On Fire"
Petra returns this week, with their 1988 release, On Fire. A few weeks ago, one of Petra's singers appeared on our website, Greg X. Volz, and a review
of his solo release, Come Out Fighting. Volz was lead singer on both of
Never Say Die/Washes Whiter Than. (1981/1979) For the On Fire album,
John Schlitt was the lead singer, as Volz's last album as Petra's lead singer was on the live Captured In Time And Space in 1986, and on the studio album,
Beat The System in 1984. Schlitt's first album with Petra as lead singer was on Back To The Street (1986). On Fire would be Schlitt's third album
as Petra's lead singer. Schlitt was also lead singer on the all-Spanish Petra En
Alabanza (1992).
For the On Fire album, it would fit most (if not all) of the 1980s hard rock (or metal) bands, (or 1980s hair bands). Lyrics for this album would
continue the theme of (Christian) spiritual warfare, and homelessness. The first three tracks features that 1980s hard rock sound - "All Fired Up," "Hit You
Where You Live," "Mine Field." Things slow down (in a good way) on the next track, "First Love," as it could be compared to a Journey song, yet John
Schlitt's vocal style doesn't hit the high range as Journey's Steve Perry did. "First Love" is a great song, adjusting to a more (Christian) Rock style.
"Defector" returns back to the hard rock, and it defnitely is harder than the first three tracks. "Counsel Of The Holy" is another hard rocker,
likewise "Somebody's Gonna Praise His Name." "Open Book" isn't as hard rocking as the others, yet it's another good (Christian) Rock track.
"Stand In The Gap" returns to the hard rock again, and "Homeless Few" slows down the pace, and a very good way to end the album.
On Fire is as hard rock can get, as these hard tracks keeps the (on) fires burning. Of course, there are the less harder rock songs to even out the mix.
Petra definitely joins the likes of the 1980s hard rocking bands, yet Petra is a hard rocking Christian band. Nevertheless, the hard rock style easily fits with
the other great 1980s hard rocking bands. Add Petra to that list. Sure, the lyrics are different than the "wild" lyrics of the '80s Rock bands, yet Petra still
fits as declaring them as another great (Christian) Rock band.
